First Year Associate Development
Young Conaway’s commitment to the professional development of its attorneys continues as it welcomes returning summer associates, new associates and judicial law clerks joining the firm as first-year and lateral associates. The firm’s dual path developmental structure allows new attorneys to learn strategic thinking and legal theory from more experienced attorneys through involvement in large, complex matters while also providing opportunities for new attorneys to individually handle smaller, less complex matters with significant client contact and case management responsibilities.

Legal Education Programs
Further training occurs through Young Conaway’s developing in-house continuing legal education program, which provides opportunities for its attorneys to continue their legal and professional development through programs ranging from litigation skills, recent developments in the law, ethical responsibilities and obligations, and personnel management. The firm has also implemented a yearlong writing program for junior associates, which emphasizes the development of both substantive writing and style.

Professional Development Account
Young Conaway encourages its attorneys to affirmatively participate in their development by providing each associate with an annual professional development account to be used for, among other purposes, business development, professional association memberships, continuing legal education seminars, and technology expenses.

Mentoring Program, Relationship Building and Evaluation Process
Young Conaway’s mentoring program pairs each associate attorney with a partner mentor who will guide them through the transition from law student or law clerk to practicing attorney and then work with them thereafter to ensure that their professional development continues through the ultimate goal of partnership.
Additionally, each new associate is paired with a more senior associate liaison also available to answer questions, provide guidance, and assist the new attorney with the development of relationships within the firm. Understanding that relationship building occurs over time, the firm’s first through third year associates are offered opportunities to participate in networking functions designed to facilitate the development of relationships with their colleagues and their transition to active practice.
Young Conaway’s evaluation process provides for biannual feedback through an informal mid-year review and a formal end-of-year review.
